A few examples are stress, anxiety, PMS, asthma and back/neck pain as well as chronic conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Cancer, Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue, and Asthma, just to name a few. If you are experiencing discomfort in your body and in your life, a therapeutic practice could improve your condition and overall health and happiness.

How does Yoga Therapy Help? Yoga and Yoga therapy are mind/body practices. Through the yogic lens, the human being is viewed as a multilevel, multi-layered creation. We are more than a body, or a mind, or a spirit. We are a beautifully complex combination of all those things. And yoga therapy works to heal us on all levels.
Body: Shown by study after study, we know that yoga is an extremely effective means for developing strength, increasing flexibility and range of motion, and for decreasing pain. People suffering chronic pain benefit from practicing yoga therapy because it is gentle, brings about balance and is custom tailored to the individual's needs.
Mind: As anyone who practices yoga has discovered, the breathing and meditative aspects of the practice bring about a sense of calm, a feeling of being grounded and help to reduce "monkey mind," that busy mind that's always hopping from one thought to the next. It's also been shown to cultivate a sense of clarity and reduce or improve the negative mental states that often go hand-in-hand with chronic pain and illness.
The body stores trauma and emotion, and when we stretch and breathe with mindfulness, we learn to let go of the tight spots, both physical and emotional, and also to accept that we are right where we are supposed to be, body and mind. The mindful, fluid movement of yoga can release tension, frustration, fear, anger and anxiety and ease depression.
Spirit: In yoga, our physical strength and flexibility are seen as mirroring our spiritual strength and flexibility. When we accept ourselves, are content and develop clarity of mind, we have tapped into essential aspects of spiritual health. Yoga encourages us to discover our own limits and to find our comfort zone. We develop an ability to take our transformation on our mat out into the world, and just as we breathe through the challenging poses in yoga, we learn to breathe through the difficult times in life. As we cultivate kindness toward ourselves, we cultivate kindness toward others. Yoga teaches us to be in the present moment, where we can live more openly, honestly and with a sense of peace. |
